I overheard an American TV host talking about goal setting just this morning.  Her words, in a roundabout kind of way, was that everyone should knuckle down & study, fiercely pursue their career and your personal life will follow.  She spoke those words from personal experience and she was SO set in her view!  So, it got me thinking that maybe 1 set of goal setting rules doesn’t always apply?

If we’re honest with ourselves, I’m sure the above question is one that many of us have asked ourselves.  We’ve set a goal, whether it be fitness or career or personal, worked our butts off, only to get x-amount of time down the track & the goal isn’t coming to fruition.  Does this mean we haven’t worked hard enough?  Should we continue plugging away at something that may never happen?

Where to from here?

  1. Breathe.
  2. Re-Assess.
  3. Re-Goal.


  1. Breathe. The most important step of all - take time out.  Move all of the focus away from the intended goal and live life as it comes.  IT’S OK TO NOT BE CHASING A GOAL!  We put far too much pressure on ourselves and it’s ok to be in limbo for a while!

Remember – remove all the guilt you’re feeling about not achieving your goal.  There is another chance just around the corner.

  1.  Re-assess.  It’s a simple one, but start weighing up the pros & cons.  Is this goal still ACHIEVABLE?

Is this something I STILL want?  And you know what? It’s ok for the answer to be no!

As humans, we are constantly changing & evolving to our surroundings.  Excited by the new, bored by the old.  Sound familiar?  This is how we learn, how we grow, how we make mistakes.  How boring would life be if we continued to do the same thing all the time?  Make a new name for yourself.  Re-ignite a passion from your younger years.

Remember – think outside the square you live in.

  1. Re-Goal. This is where the magic is made!  Fresh thoughts, clearer perspective and a genuine love for what is up next.  These goals haven’t been made from a knee jerk reaction, they’ve been made from calculated decisions, with the least amount of stress as possible.

Remember - the voice from your heart is far louder than the one from your head.

We have some really great long-term Shedders that have “failed” at specific goals, or re-assessed their current ones, made changes & tweaked existing goals.  During our regular Goal Assessment Reviews, it becomes immediately apparent that not every client has the same goal in sight compared to when they started.

Let’s face it, we can all get caught up in what we THOUGHT we wanted, what SOCIETY says we should want and what we originally wanted but CAN’T HAVE anymore.

Embrace change.  Because it’s such a beautiful thing in so many different ways.
